Meeting 2021 (Online)

Imaging Dynamic Interfaces - Resuscitation

May 27th - 28th, 2021

The generation of stable compartments with a defined content different from the immediate environment is a central hallmark of life. Life’s molecular machinery relies on the resulting interfaces located inside cells, between cells and between tissues for the generation of energy, the transmission of information and the maintenance of homeostasis and organ integrity.

The 2021 annual conference of CRC 1348 brings together distinguished international scientists who employ imaging-based research strategies to investigate the formation and function of dynamic interfaces at various scales in life science research. Topics addressed will cover the cell biology and molecular mechanisms of membrane fission and vesicle fusion, which governing formation and function of subcellular structures. A particular emphasis of the discussion will be on synaptic information transmission between neurons. Besides synapses, endothelial cells of the vascular wall form a cellular interface essential for vital functions. Lecture topics will cover maintenance of endothelial tissue integrity and vascular functions in the context of CNS neuronal protection and continued immune surveillance. But also pathological dysfunctions, like impaired fluid homeostasis and cancer formation are topics of this conference. A special vascular interface is formed by the liver sinusoidal endothelium that will be illuminated form the perspective of high resolution microscopy. Besides their physiological functions, dynamic cellular interfaces provide obstacles but also unique opportunities for pathogens, a topic that is covered by lectures on viral and bacterial infections and innovative bacteria-selective labeling strategies.

Over the last two decades imaging has been a most transforming power in biological sciences. Yet for full exploitation of increasingly powerful microscopes equally sophisticated sample preparation and imaging technologies have to be developed. In addition, biomedical imaging has transgressed the simple preparation of highly resolved images and increasingly entered the realm of a quantitative science. These developments are accommodated in special sessions dedicated to novel imaging approaches, image visualisation and analysis.

We look forward to seeing you all at our virtual conference this year!
